Working Languages

GITIS currently accepts students for its main MA programs in Translation and Conference Interpretation with either of two language combinations: Chinese-English (or English-Chinese) and Chinese-Japanese (or Japanese-Chinese); and for its on-the-job MA in Translation, with Chinese-English or English-Chinese.Students must state their language combination (see below) on the ‘Personal Information Form’and in on-line registration. Working languages and combinations are explained below.

‘A’ language: The native language or main language of education, in which the candidate must have a thorough command of vocabulary and style and be comfortable in all registers.

‘B’ language: an acquired language in which the candidate has attained near-native reading and/or listening comprehension* and the ability to express ideas clearly and fluently orally and/or in writing.*

The language combination must include Chinese as the A or B language. GITIS students are trained to work between their A and B languages in both directions.

*depending on whether he/she is applying to do an MA in Translation or Conference Interpretation with Translation.

Language combinations accepted

Chinese A – English B

Chinese A – Japanese B

English A – Chinese B

Japanese A – Chinese B

In rare cases, students may provisionally be admitted as pure bilinguals (two A languages), or in exceptional cases, with all three of the Institute’s current languages*.

* In this case either English or Japanese may be offered as a C (passive or source) language, requiring complete understanding but not active proficiency. However, availability of this combination will depend on teaching resources available in a particular year.Candidates wishing to offer three languages are requested to contact the Institute before registration.
